TI Unveils Integrated Power Management IC for DaVinci(TM) Technology-Based Portable Electronics

DALLAS , Nov. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Instruments Incorporated (NYSE: TXN)(TI) introduced today the first power management integrated circuit (PMIC)fully optimized to support all power system requirements of a multimediadevice based on DaVinci(TM) technology. Simplifying power design in portablemedia players, digital still cameras and other lithium-battery poweredelectronics, the flexible device provides dynamic voltage scaling and up to95 percent power conversion efficiency. TI's TPS65023 converter manages the power in a TMS320DM644x digital signalprocessor (DSP) based on DaVinci technology with high-performance digitalcontrol and maximum efficiency across the widest possible range of loadcurrents up to 1.5-A. The device, which comes in a small 5 mm x 5 mm QFNpackage, integrates three step-down converters to support the system's corevoltage, peripheral, I/O and memory voltage. The TPS65023 uses an I2Ccommunications interface to implement a dynamic voltage scaling technique thatdigitally adjusts the core output voltage level between 0.8 V and 1.6 V,allowing the system to conserve power. The interface is compatible withfast/standard and high-speed mode I2C specification, which allows datatransfer up to 400-kHz. All three of TPS65023's step-down converters allowsthe device to operate in a power-save mode at light-load currents, and can beplaced in a shutdown mode when power consumption is reduced to less than 1-uA.

The TPS65023 also integrates two general-purpose, 200-mA linear dropout(LDO) voltage regulators that are enabled with an external input pin. EachLDO operates with an input voltage range between 2.5 V and 6.5 V, which allowseach to be supplied from one of the integrated step-down converters ordirectly from the battery.
