Studies Show CAD May Improve Efficiency and Accuracy in Breast MRI Evaluations

RSNA 2005 Hall B, Booth 8750 CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 30, 2005--Confirma today announced that abstracts are being presented at the 91st Annual Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) meeting, currently underway in Chicago, Illinois, demonstrating that CADstream(TM), computer-aided-detection (CAD) for breast MRI, may improve efficiency and accuracy in breast MRI evaluation. Both abstracts are being presented at the Arie Crown Theater in the McCormick Place Convention Center. Professionals from 90 countries are expected to convene and discuss the latest in radiologic innovations at the meeting, which is being held November 27 through December 2.

In the abstract entitled: "Analysis of Computer Aided Evaluation for Breast MRI in Discriminating Benign and Malignant Lesions," Wendy B. DeMartini, M.D., Theresa C. Williams, M.D., Constance D. Lehman, M.D., Ph.D., Sue Peacock, MSc and Savannah C. Partridge, Ph.D. of Seattle Cancer Care Alliance compared the accuracy of breast MRI interpretation without and with computer-aided evaluation in discriminating benign from malignant lesions. The computer-aided evaluation's automated assessment improved accuracy compared to MRI interpretation without computer assistance. The researchers believe that if these results are validated in larger studies with varied imaging protocols, the number of unnecessary MRI-guided biopsies may be reduced.

In the abstract entitled: "Effectiveness of CAD in the Evaluation of Breast Cancer and Pathology," J.C. Vilanova, M.D. and J. Barcelo of Clinica Girona evaluated the effectiveness of CAD to detect breast cancer based on MR mammography features and the pathology results. The study demonstrated that breast MRI CAD may be helpful to assess breast cancer and assist radiologists by saving substantial time during the analysis and interpretation of studies. Additionally, the study showed improved accuracy with breast MR evaluation.
