The 17th VISION Award for Applied Machine Vision was presented to the Dutch firm, Adimec Advanced Image Systems for its CoaXPress interface, which was jointly developed with a consortium of companies. In accepting the award, Jochem Herrmann, CTO of Adimec, explained that CoaXPress is capable of sendingĀ  video, control and power at high speeds over conventional coaxial cable. It combines the simplicity of coax cable with state-of-the-art high-speed serial data technology.

The initial CoaXPress specification allows for a base configuration with 3.125 Gbit/second image transmission from the camera. There also is a full configuration offering 6.25 Gbit/section. For higher speeds, the full configuration can be implemented with two or more links, giving multiples of y6.25 Gbit/second channel speeds. CoaXPress works at distances of more than 100 meters, which is more than 10 times that of Camera Link.

The consortium partners are Adimec; EqcoLogic, a Belgian fab-less semiconductor company; Active Silicon, a UK company specializing in frame grabbers and embedded systems; Components Express, a U.S.-based cabling specialist; AVAL Data, a Japanese frame grabber company; and NED, a Japanese camera and frame grabber vendor with particular strength in line-scan cameras.

Adimec and EqcoLogic developed the first working CoaXPress prototype systems, then continued development by expanding the consortium, which is developing the first draft of a CoaXPress specification. The Japan Industrial Imaging Association has agreed to host the standardization.
