How do you think the new GigE standards will influence the machine vision industry?

OK, admit it. When you shop for a car, you slam the door and listen for a solid thud. It indicates, among other things, that the vehicle is well-made. A new image-processing system combines intelligent sensors and a camera (with FireWire interface) to help determine the gap between the door and the vehicle body and calculates the optimal position.
The system now is being used for assembly at two European manufacturers: all attached parts of the Mercedes Benz S-Class and for the doors of the Opel Corsa. It's also being used for other applications, including positioning of robot tools for punching, stamping or riveting in automobile production.
I'm sure that Henry David would be amazed.
