OK, I'm frustrated. I am frustrated with many of our elected representatives in Congress. And I don't get frustrated easily.
Watching our elected officials scramble over each other to get on the Sunday morning talk shows and the evening news programs makes me, at turns, want to scratch my head and then shake them about by their lapels.
Whether it is the Terry Schiavo case, which was shamefully used as a political ploy by some politicians, or steroids in baseball, which proved that Congress can and will accept non-answers to non-questions, the Pavlovian politicians cannot help but slobber over the opportunity for political gain.
If the bell rings, or in this case the camera light comes on, the politicians line up for their opportunity to sit across the desk from George Stephanopolous, Tim Russert, Bob Schieffer. If Kermit the Frog were the anchor, they would pull up a frond and clip on a microphone.
How can serious work get done when many politicians only want to find the spotlight? This is the year when serious work must get done. This year, logjams must be broken, difficult issues must be tackled. Next year, the mid-term election cycle begins and little will get done then. The time to start is now. Get to work.
