Industrial and scientific
imaging applications are processing more and more pixel data. In fact,
some imaging applications have pixel processing rates on the order of
hundreds of Mbytes per second. If you are running such demanding applications
on conventional machines, you can run into problems because there's only
so much bandwidth available. A sluggish network connection, a slow-down
in your inspection procedures, or lost data are all possible because all
the operations performed on a host computer compete for the system's resources.
Even machines that operate at rates of 3 GHz may have several demanding
tasks to process in parallel.
