I HEAR THE SIRENS

One of the main reasons that I never make use of my legal training and education is the type of behind-the-scenes litigation that is gnawing away at the electronic imaging industry today. The ambulance chasers are beginning to have a field day. Yes, I have been called upon to be an industry expert in several of these hushed-up legal proceedings ? more recently for image compression and several others that I cannot comment on here.

While we all regaled at the Lemelson rulings in favor of Cognex, there were more tidal waves churning on the horizon. The most infamous one being the St. Clair patents. Check them out:

? #6,496,222 ? Digital camera with memory format initialization

? #6,323,899 ? Process for use in electronic camera

? #6,233,010 ? Electronic still video camera with direct personal computer (PC) compatible digital format output

? #6,094,219 ? Electronic still video camera with direct personal computer (PC) compatible digital format output

? #5,576,757 ? Electronic still video camera with direct personal computer (PC) compatible digital format output
