Established in 1980, FOTODYNE (Hartland, Wis.) provides a full range of Electronic Imaging and Analysis Systems for digital documentation, storage and analysis of scientific data. The company is committed to providing innovative and quality products for life science research and education.

“We design and manufacture imaging systems for molecular biology research. Our instruments are used by scientists who are studying DNA, RNA, proteins, and other types of samples,” said Brian Walsh, FOTODYNE president. The company provides solutions for research labs and universities throughout the world. “We often hear from customers who are using new stains or dyes and want advice on the best lighting source or photographic filter for their application. We can help by recommending and supplying products that meet the specific excitation and transmission requirements for optimal performance. For example, we offer visible light boxes and UV transilluminators with several wavelength and intensity options. Optimal performance might come down to camera choice as well,” said Walsh. “Our systems feature digital or CCD cameras which vary in dynamic range, resolution, and sensitivity at critical wavelengths.”

One such solution is the FOTO/Analyst Luminary Workstation. It provides flexible chemiluminescent and fluorescent imaging and is designed to acquire, print and store digital images of chemiluminescent, fluorescent and visible light samples.

The Foto/Analyst Luminary can obtain digital images of a wide variety of samples. A cooled CCD camera combined with the light-tight FOTO/Luminary Benchtop Darkroom and extended integration software allows the user to maximize exposure times for low light samples. It features dual light epi-illumination with both UV and white light sources. Short wave and long wave UV epi-illumination options are also available. Files can be archived in nine file formats to preserve data integrity for downstream analysis or to conserve data storage space.

To remain on the cutting edge of the molecular biology imaging market, FOTODYNE is looking to broaden its offering with more color options. “Things change with stains, dyes and sample types, so we need to change as well,” said Walsh.
