“The paucity of new, revolutionary vision algorithms has encouraged vision software providers to differentiate themselves by making their software easier to use,” said Kyle Voosen, Vision Product Manager for National Instruments (Austin, Texas). “The most obvious trend in this area is the addition of ease-of-use features like code generation to programming libraries. By making programming libraries easier to use, some software providers hope that they can attract new, end-user customers to their OEM focused programming libraries.”

Voosen noted that beyond programming libraries, the larger trend in making image processing software easier to use is in the adoption of configurable and interactive vision environments. These environments enable users to acquire images, choose algorithms, set regions-of-interest, and finally communicate inspection results to other devices without programming.

“At AccuSoft, we’re seeing a couple of trends right now that are driving our product direction,” said Chris Martin, Product Manager for the VisiQuest product line for AccuSoft Corporation (Northborough, Mass). “A major trend is driven by the evolution of more intelligent hardware (cameras, frame grabbers, etc.) in the machine vision market. Hardware vendors realize that their products can quickly become commoditized if they don’t provide added value and are thus looking to include additional image pre-processing capabilities bundled into their products to provide a complete solution. Simple vision applications that were being performed using a remote PC host will be moved closer to the sensor.”

Able Software (Lexington, Mass.) has released new version 4.0 of its 3D-DOCTOR software. 3D-DOCTOR creates 3D polygonal models and volume displays from cross-sectional image on a real time basis. Images are segmented using either the fully automated texture-based segmentation or the interactive threshold-based segmentation method. The software provides measurement functions to measure 3D volume, distance, 3D locations, thickness, area of a region, surface area, image density profile and image histogram of a region in any shape. This product’s advanced image processing functions include template-based scanned film cropping, 3D image re-slicing to change slice thickness or re-slice along an arbitrary axis, registration and image fusion of multi-modality images.

3D-DOCTOR supports a wide variety of modalities such as CT, MRI, PET, industrial CT and microscopy images in a number of formats: DICOM, Interfile, TIFF, BMP, JPEG, GIF, PNG, RAW, MRC and other file formats as well.
