The BCM7043 incorporates a new and advanced encoding engine that leveragesBroadcom's market leading experience in encoding. Additionally, the BCM7043utilizes a broad range of in-production capabilities currently found inBroadcom's set-top box and digital TV SoCs, including an advanced videodecoder that supports high definition AVC, MPEG-2, VC-1, MPEG-4, and DVDplayback; a security processor; an advanced video pre-processor; and audiocodecs that enable the highest performing platform for robust, high qualityencoding and transcoding of connected home devices.
Incorporating a host of video and audio encoder and decoder engines, theBCM7043 is able to share non-compatible video and audio content by transcodingthem to the proper format required for each device. The key built-in modulesinclude:* Video Compression Engine: uncompressed video input is delivered to this encoder engine and converts the sequence of uncompressed video pictures into H.264, AVC, MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 compressed video streams. * Advanced Video Decoder (AVD): the AVD module decodes compressed video for re-encoding using the video compression subsystem. * Advanced Audio Module: the advanced audio module contains a programmable audio processor that supports real-time decode of MPEG-1, Layer-II, Dolby(R) Digital and Dolby Digital Plus Stereo, DTS, DTS-HD, MP-3 and PCM; and real-time encode of MPEG-1, Layer-II, Dolby Digital, MP-3 and PCM audio formats. * Video Input Processor (VIP): the VIP module prepares uncompressed video for encoding and, in conjunction with the video pre-processor, motion compensated temporal filtering (MCTF) and digital noise reduction produces excellent video quality and excellent compression efficiency.
The BCM7043 is designed using the 65 nanometer process -- the mostadvanced lithographic node for manufacturing semiconductors in large volumestoday -- and provides significant benefits over 90 nm and 130 nm processes byenabling lower power consumption, smaller size and higher levels ofintegration. For Broadcom, the move to the 65 nanometer process technology ischanging the competitive landscape because of the breadth and depth of theintellectual property that the company possesses and can integrate into newdevices. Without a broad portfolio of market-leading solutions to integrate,competitors are not able to take full advantage of the benefits that thesenext generation processes provide.
