Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp. (CMO), the No. 2 panel maker on the island, is also actively expanding its panel capacity to meet strong demand. The company recently announced plans to double the monthly capacity of its 5.5G facility in Southern Taiwan Science Park (STSP) to 180,000 substrates by the end of this year. CMO's new 5G plant is scheduled for mass production in mid-2006, and a new 7.5G facility for late this year
Meanwhile, Corning's Verdon also pointed out that the demand volume for over-30-inch TV panels grow by 100% per year, especially in the 30- to 39-inch segment, while that for the 40- to 49-inch segment is expected to enjoy high growth starting from this year
In 2007, the global production capacity of LCD TVs is expected to reach about 48 million units, and Corning will accelerate its capacity expansion to meet the rapidly increasing market demand, according to Verdon. In addition to 5.5G, 6G, and 7.5G substrates products, Verdon said that Corning is ready to satisfy panel makers' demands for 8G or 9G- and -beyond substrates.
