Taipei, Jan. 18, 2006 (CENS)--Taiwan is expected to become the world's largest producer of thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panels with a 44% share of the global market, outstripping South Korea's 32%, according to Eugene A. Verdon Jr., president of Corning Display Technologies Taiwan

Verdon recently said the rapid growth in Taiwan's share of the global market is mainly fueled by bold capacity expansion projects by local makers in the line. Corning is currently the world's largest supplier of glass substrates for TFT-LCD panels with a global market share of over 50%, and therefore has kept updated the shipment conditions of downstream panel makers

H.B. Chen, president and chief operating officer (COO) of AU Optronics Corp. (AUO), Taiwan's No. 1 and world's No. 3 TFT-LCD panel maker, pointed out that his company has been stepping up capacity expansions to meet brisk demand for LCD TV panels in the first quarter this year

AUO plans to set up three 7.5th-generation (7.5G)- and -beyond panel facilities in Central Taiwan Science Park (CTSP) at a total cost of over NT$400 billion (US$12.5 billion at US$1: NT$32), and the construction of the first 7.5G plant in CTSP is scheduled to begin on May 1

Chunghwa Picture Tubes, Ltd. (CPT), the No. 3 TFT-LCD panel maker in Taiwan, also plans to establish two new-generation panel plants in the CTSP and will start construction on April 1. Both AUO and CPT will have their new-generation panel plants kick off mass production by the end of 2007
