Director Says Charlotte Perfect For Optics Center
Q. Is there really that big a market for an optics center here?
There are about 160 companies that are either straight optoelectronics companies or rely heavily on optics within the two states. And a lot of them are clustered either around the Research Triangle Park (near Raleigh) or the Charlotte region.
Q. What's been the most difficult part of building this triangle so far?
I'm not sure we've had a hard part yet. We've been extremely fortunate on each campus that each of the states has provided support for buildings. We've been able to hire strategically over (the) past three years. It's a relatively young faculty. For many of them, it is their first faculty position. Of course, they're full of energy and ideas.
