CMOT Press Release

Greenville, SC – Jan 31, 2006 – Mission Accomplished! The Carolinas MicroOptics Triangle was introduced to the nation at the Photonics West Show in San Jose. Over 15,000 people were in attendance at this large, optical technology conference. Many, if not most, had the opportunity to get to know the Carolinas MicroOptics Triangle in detail. Hundreds of people made individual contacts in the pursuit of new technologies, new products, future meetings, or additional information.

"The collaboration between Clemson, UNC-Charlotte, and Western Carolina and the economic development entities proved to be a great success at the Photonics West Show. We were able to attract a great deal of attention from companies exhibiting at the show. I feel that this will lead to our long term success in attracting high-tech companies in the optics and photonics industries to our area," said Anderson County Economic Development Director John Lummus.

Kenny McDonald, Sr. VP Economic Development at the Charlotte Regional Partnership added, “CMOT represents the type of coordination between academia, business, and economic development agencies that is required to distinguish the Carolinas as a unique region in which to develop and apply optical technology.”

The Carolinas MicroOptics Triangle will be participating in InnoVenture 2006 on March 28-29 in Greenville. John Ballato, Director of COMSET at Clemson University is an invited speaker who will present CMOT’s capabilities and direction. Dr. Ballato noted, “There is a compelling case to be made for investment in this multi-billion dollar market which is growing at a double digit rate. The technologies from the CMOT partners will be the core of new business growth for the region in this exciting market.” CMOT will have a booth at InnoVenture and individuals from all campuses in attendance to answer any questions.

The Carolinas MicroOptics Triangle (CMOT) was formed in 2002 to formally synergize the technology platforms of Clemson University, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and Western Carolina University for technology advancement, local education efforts, support to local companies, and economic development for the region. To date, $86M has been invested, a number of new jobs have been created, new degree programs have been established, and the two-state region has established a reputation as one of the top optical centers in the world.
