Tokyo, July 12 (Jiji Press)--Japanese consumer electronics makers are set to beef up their domestic sales of rear projection television sets this year, hoping to develop them into a significant force in the flat TV market.
With Japan's flat-screen TV market virtually dominated by liquid crystal display TVs and plasma display panel TVs, sales of rear projection TVs totaled a mere 2,000 units in 2004.
Rear-projection TVs have sets of small LCD panels inside, onto which images are projected. The images are magnified by lenses and reflected onto the screens by mirrors.
They have gained popularity mostly in the United States and other countries where large houses are common. With improvement in image quality, the manufacturers are hoping that rear projection TVs will now be accepted by the Japanese as well.
Industry leader Sony Corp. is aiming to sell 10,000 units of rear projection TVs in Japan this year by introducing a high-end model priced at more than 1.5 million yen and other models with more reasonable prices.
