Business Editors Storage Networking World Fall 2006 ORLANDO, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 31, 2006--Spectra Logic, the data storage innovator, today announced the first backup and archive-oriented disk system to be managed with Spectra's BlueScale(R) interface: the Spectra(R) D500 network storage appliance. The D500's powerful BlueScale interface is the same that thousands of Spectra Logic flagship T-Series customers have used for years. The D500 integrates a customized RAID-protected disk array, a powerful server, NAS head and an integrated network interface. Storage managers can use the Spectra D500 as an NFS/CIFS disk-based cache for near-line data storage before archiving to tape.

The integrated BlueScale software -- a powerful, proven and easy-to-use interface providing a single point of management for disk and tape -- makes Spectra Logic the first company to offer disk-, VTL- and tape-based backup and archival systems managed with one common interface. The D500 integrates easily into Ethernet networks and Windows environments. By adding a single appliance designed specifically for data backup that interoperates seamlessly with Spectra Logic tape libraries, administrators have an integrated, comprehensive backup and archival system from a single vendor.

The D500 is a compact 3U unit configurable with two, four and eight terabytes of raw storage space. Separate mirrored operating system disks ensure raw storage is dedicated to data backup and archive, while also providing redundancy and high availability of the operating system. Users can run any backup application to store data to the D500 and optionally to tape.

"Spectra Logic's D500 disk appliance lets administrators take advantage of disk for backup, with a streamlined path for data movement to tape," said Matt Starr, CTO for Spectra Logic. "We designed the D500 to be managed with the same powerful BlueScale interface that our tape customers have appreciated for years, and the D500 simply drops into existing networks to offload backup and archival tasks, while also integrating tightly with our tape libraries."

About the D500

The Spectra D500 is compatible with all major ISV packages, including Backup Exec, Net Backup, CommVault, and a variety of HSM packages including IBM's Tivoli Storage Manager. Additionally, the D500 can be bundled with Microsoft DPM 2006 for near-continuous data protection of Windows servers. The D500 is designed with a Xeon motherboard and dual core processor running Windows Storage Server 2003.
