New York Oct. 6 Nikon Instruments (Melville, NY) announced the winner of its Small World 2005 Annual Competition at the Hudson Theater. The honor went to Charles B. Krebs of Charles Krebs Photography (Issaquah, WA), whose picture was of a muscoid fly (house fly) magnified at 6.25x using reflected light.
Rounding out the top five were:
Thomas J. Deerinck of the National Center for Microscopy & Imaging Research, University of California San Diego (La Jolla, CA), quantum dot fluorescence image of a mouse kidney section (240x), fluorescence (two-photon).
Stefan Eberhard, Complex Carbohydrate Research Center, University of Georgia (Athens, GA), crystallized vitamin A (40x), polarized light.
Edy Keiser, Ennenda, Switzerland, crystallized succinic acid and urea (50x), polarized light.
Neil J. Egan, PPG Industries (Cleveland), bacteria growth in petri dish (30x), stereomicroscopy.
